VELUX FONDEN wishes to contribute to a healthy marine environment that is more resilient to climate change and provides both recreational pleasures and better fisheries.

We're curious – share your idea with us

Before drafting your application, we recommend that you get in touch with us to outline your project and discuss it with us.

The Danish marine environment is under pressure from several quarters, and there is a need for ambitious initiatives to reverse this trend.

We support focused projects that either contribute directly to a healthier marine environment in Denmark or to reducing the impact from a pressure factor.

We prioritise support to partnerships between several players that influence the resolution to a problem or that are affected by it.

If you have a good idea for a project, we would like to hear from you.

Since 2015, we have supported projects within five main themes:

A CLEAN SEA

Large quantities of plastic, chemicals and nutrients are discharged into the Danish marine environment every year. Some of these are toxic, hormone-disrupting or carcinogenic substances. Others affect the marine ecosystem in different ways, for example through increased eutrophication.

We support projects aimed at limiting discharges of environmentally hazardous or environmentally foreign substances into the marine environment. This includes man-made activities that have adverse effects on living resources and marine ecosystems, including loss of biodiversity.

SUSTAINABLE AND low impact FISHERIES

Sustainable use of marine resources is an essential part of a healthy marine environment.

We support projects that promote the development of low impact fisheries to avoid negative impacts on the seabed as well as marine plants and animals.

MARINE ecosystem RESTORATION

The health and biodiversity of the sea are in such a poor state that it is not enough simply to stop human activity in vulnerable areas. There is a need to give nature a helping hand.

We support projects that restore the balance of marine ecosystems, so that they can achieve good environmental status. This means better biodiversity as well as increased resilience of the sea to climate change.

MAPPING OF THE SEA

Mapping and better data on the sea and its habitats are essential in ensuring sustainable use of the marine environment.

We support projects that create increased knowledge about the sea, its resources and threats for use in the public authorities’ management thereof.

AWARENESS

The biodiversity beneath the surface of the Danish seas is unknown to the vast majority of Danes. There is a lack of awareness and understanding of the importance of the sea as the last wilderness.

We support projects that raise awareness and create knowledge of the sea and its resources among authorities and the population with a view to action.

Working group for Environment

VILLUM FONDEN and VELUX FONDEN have set up a number of working groups mainly for the purpose of contributing to the allocation activities of the foundations taking place on a professional, sound and in other respects exemplary basis. The object of the working groups is to assist the board of trustees with strategic development as well as with the handling and recommendations to decide on applications and projects within selected areas, presently the individual allocation areas as well as the asset management.

Members of the working group for environment

  • Astrid Kann-Rasmussen, nurse,  Vice-Chair and Co-Founder, KR Foundation
  • David Dupont-Mouritzen, MSc. cultural geographer, Project Director at Copenhagen Infrastructure Service Partners, external member
  • Minik Rosing, Professor, National History Museum of Denmark, University of Copenhagen, Licenciate (PhD), MSc., Vice-Chair of VELUX FONDEN
  • Sif Johansson, senior adviser at The Swedish Research Council Formas, PhD, external member
International partnership

VELUX FONDEN has entered into a partnership with IOC-UNESCO (the Intergovernmental Oceanographic Commission) to promote the United Nations Decade of Ocean Science for Sustainable Development 2021-2030.

The Decade campaign is in-line with VELUX FONDEN’s focus on Denmark's marine environment within the foundation's Environment grant area.

Green focus

VILLUM FONDEN and VELUX FONDEN prioritise projects that focus on the environment and sustainability. For example, VILLUM FONDEN has founded the international environmental protection foundation KR Foundation and is co-founder of the Danish Nature Fund.
